1791 France Allarde’s decree abolished corporations, introducing a radical change in the economy and the organization of work.
1848 France Decree limiting working hours to ten hours in Paris and eleven hours in the provinces. Abolition of labour contractors (recruitment of workers by intermediaries).
1921 Russia Conference marking the start of the non-violent revolt in Kronstadt (Crimea) and the Russian utimatum. The revolt will be crushed on April 19 by the Red Army under the command of Trotsky.
1948 Martinique Fusillade du Carbet. General strike at the Lajus plantation. The cane cutters request the application of the same wages and conditions as 1947. The owner refuses. A shooting disperses workers and onlookers. On the ground, 3 dead and 2 wounded.
1956 Algeria Creation of the General Union of Algerian Workers by the FLN.
1969 South Africa SACTU leaders exiled in Zambia meet to develop a strategy to revitalize the union, which has been rendered ineffective by the apartheid government.
1986 Canada Workers in Newfoundland and Labrador's Transport and Public Works departments begin an illegal strike in response to a law that requires public sector unions to designate 49 per cent of their members as essential before taking strike action. [more]
