Today in Labour History
1889 Argentina Feminist and worker activist Juana Rouco Buela was born in Spain. Moving to Buenos Aires, she organised female sugar workers, took part in tenants' and workers' strikes, was deported but returned and never gave up.
1905 France 10,000 at Vardelle's funeral in Limoges, "victim of the capitalist regime", "our brother assassinated on April 17 by French bullets".
1924 Russia The Kronstadt revolt was crushed by the Red Army commanded by Trotsky: 4,836 sailors were deported, 6,528 arrested, 2,168 executed. 10,000 dead on the Red Army side in repeated failures to retake the city.
1947 Senegal A strike on the eve of a visit by the President of the French Republic obtained an agreement on a unified framework for railway workers, and the maintenance of 3,000 jobs. The employers then thwarted the negotiations, causing a wave of strikes.
1968 Italy While 6,000 textile workers were on strike in Valdagno, scabs were snuck into the factory under police protection. Strikers fought 1000 police and toppled the bronze statue of the factory’s founder.
1974 Canada In a targeted campaign for pay equity, postal workers begin a seven-day illegal strike that wins women postal code machine operators the same pay as male postal clerks.[more]
2003 Nigeria Striking workers occupy 4 offshore oil rigs.
2023 Canada After more than a year of bargaining, 155,000 public service workers across 30 federal government departments go out on a successful strike, marking one of the largest strikes by federal employees in Canadian history. [more]
