1811 United Kingdom In Nottingham, hosiery workers (stockings, socks) are protesting against the automation of their trades and their replacement by less skilled and paid workers. They break 60 machines at Arnold.
1908 Canada The Fishermen’s Protective Union is formed in Herring Neck, Newfoundland and Labrador. The union attracts strong support and achieves significant political influence.[more]
1918 Germany Sailors on the German High Seas Fleet in Kiel mutiny, raising the slogan "Peace and Bread." This starts the German revolution which will overthrow the Kaiser and hasten the end of the First World War.
1921 United States of America Striking milk truck drivers in New York City dump thousands of gallons of milk on the streets.
1948 France To support the striking miners, the dockers of Lorient and Bordeaux refuse to unload the foreign coal but they are replaced by the military.
1952 Africa A call for a strike by the CGT in West Africa, the CFTC and the independent railway workers is practically 100% effective in Senegal, Sudan, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Dahomey and Upper Volta for the week of 40 hour week.
