Today in Labour History


1919 Malta 2,500 members of the Imperial Government Workers Union strike over wages then join the huge crowd demanding independence. Police kill 4.

1968 United Kingdom Women workers at the Ford factory in Dagenham walked out on strike for equal pay with male workers. They eventually agreed to return to work after three weeks after being offered 92% of the men’s wages.[more]

1972 Pakistan Protests by unions start in opposition to martial law that last all month. Dozens of workers are killed as the army suppresses strikes and occupations.[more]

1972 Pakistan Police opened fire into a crowd of strikers demanding backpay in Karachi, killing three and injuring dozens. The funeral procession was also attacked by police, workers responded with a mass strike across the city.
