13-02-1939 Sugar workers on Plantation Leonora strike for half a day in a protest against the 11.5-hour work day and demand an extra hour's pay per day. The walkout spreads and within 2 days almost the workforce, 30% women, is out. [more]

16-02-1939 Colonial police open fire on sugar plantation strikers killing three or four people, including one woman. Named victims include Robert Carter, Gunpat, and Sumintra. The violent repression puts an end to the strike. [more]
