Possible new campaign

93,000 workers went on strike at an Adidas factory in Vietnam two weeks ago; 20 were reportedly arrested.  I’ve asked SACOM (in Hong Kong) who broke the news if we should do a campaign.  If so, it could go very large – Adidas is a household name.  More details soon.

UnionBook reaches 4,000

This is progress – albeit slow progress.   (UnionBook has grown from 2,800 to 4,000 in 6 months – an average growth of 200 per month.)

I’ve just sent out a message to all 4,000 members of UnionBook urging them to recruit others – and there’s now a countdown clock on the front page to 4 September when we will decide whether to continue with the project.

If we have 5,000 members signed up by then, we will.  If not, we’ll have to think about this.

Our current campaigns – in order of popularity

  • Bahrain – 4,671 (after 79 days) +5
  • Georgia – 3,412 (after 7 days) +60
  • Iraq – 3,391 (after 37 days) +5
  • Botswana – 3,343 (after 31 days) +3
  • Colombia – 2,773 (after 17 days) +6
  • Swaziland – 2,338 (after 77 days) +2
  • Russia – 1,663 (after 28 days) +7

(Updated after 3 days – the numbers in blue indicate how many new supporters each campaign has signed up in the last three days.)

Some thoughts – and I’d love to hear yours …

  • The Georgia campaign is doing exceptionally well after only a week.  If we can keep up some momentum, this could become one of our big ones.  This may be due to the big surge in our lists after the very successful online campaign in support of Canadian postal workers.
  • The Russia campaign, on the other hand, is getting hardly any response at all.  I wonder why.  Could it be that people don’t want to get involved in what may be a complex case — one that requires us to trust a union’s account of what has happened and to distrust the authorities?  Or is it just too obscure?
  • Very disappointed in the Swaziland result, but my guess is that it’s the fact that there’s so little media attention paid (outside of southern Africa), so people don’t know where this is.  Of course the same may be said of Georgia, but many Europeans will at least have a vague sense of where Georgia is.
  • The Bahrain campaign is the next one we’ll shut down in another 11 days, and it’s unlikely (unfortunately) that it will be one of the special ones that clears the 5,000 mark.  Too bad.

So, what do others think?

Major new campaign launched in defense of Georgian unions

The International Department of the AFL-CIO in Washington has asked for our help with this one. It’s an important campaign and I hope that we can grow it into a very large one.

Our biggest campaign – by far – is now closed

The Canadian postal workers campaign is now closed.  It received a total of 13,821 messages sent – here’s a breakdown by language:

  • English 11,955 (9,053 from Canada; 2,902 from elsewhere)
  • French 1,567 (1,317 from Canada; 250 from elsewhere)
  • Norwegian 161
  • Spanish 92
  • German 46

Here’s what the union had to say to us:

CUPW wants to thank LabourStart for this campaign.   It buoyed our spirits, made it clear that for many people back to work legislation is unacceptable, and put pressure on the Minister.   Although the back to work legislation was ultimately passed, the help and support form Labour start made a difference for CUPW members.
Even though we  have been ordered back to work, our  fight is not over.    CUPW’s members heads are held high and we will continue to work for respect, dignity, and a sharing of the benefits.   We will demand our rights in the workplace, and continue to work with allies for fairness for postal workers and to regain our right to free collective bargaining.  We will work with our allies  for justice locally, nationally, and internationally.   We are proud of the struggle we have waged and are determined to continue it.
CUPW looks forward to continuing to work with Labour Start.

Two victories

We’re closing down two online campaigns because we’ve won – Atilio Jaimes Pérez is free, 17 days after launch of the LabourStart campaign, and Arwyn Thomas, the sacked union rep on the London Underground, has been reinstated.

A Note About the Canadian Post Office Campaign

It looks as though the NDP, the social democratic party and official opposition, may be fairly effective in delaying the back-to-work legislation. This gives a bit more life to the campaign – it may still be live early next week.

This is an important campaign not just for the union involved, but for LabourStart’s reputation in Canada (very good now I should say) and it has already added several thousand new addresses to our mailing lists.

Please push this in any way you can. Especially with any contacts you might have with transportation/communications/post office unions in Latin America (where this union is well-known).

To date Facebook has proven quite effective. Give it a try if you have an account, try posting links and explanatory text on union pages/groups or even on the walls of individuals with lots of union ‘friends’.

Thanks.

Campaigns, conference, donations

First of all, my goal of 10,000 messages in the Canada Post campaign by the weekend turned out to be not ambitious enough.  It’s only Thursday and we already have 11,213 messages sent.  Unfortunately, the Colombia Vale campaign launched the same day, has received only one-fifth as many supporters – 2,455.  Which raises some questions in my mind about how we go about building the global campaigning capacity of the international trade union movement.  I intend to address these in a column I’ll be writing later today for Solidarity, a British weekly.

Conference registrations are not exactly flooding in — but at least today I’ve sorted out some error processing.  If you try to sign up without giving your name, or an email address, or a country (e.g., you leave ‘Select a country’ as your choice), you’ll be prompted to fix these.  You might think, who would register without giving such basic details, but a significant percentage of those who fill in the form leave out their name, country and email – which are the basic things we need.

Finally, a £500 donation from a union in New Zealand has pushed us very close to the £20,000 mark in this year’s May Day fundraising campaign.  This is great news, but we can do better — and I’ll be following up today with 6 unions which last year donated a total of £7,000.  While the amount of money coming in is nearly double what we raised last year, and that’s great, this is nothing as compared to what other groups manage to raise.  We can do so much better if we try.

Wednesday updates

  • We’re around 500 people short of our goal of 10,000 supporters for this campaign – we’ll do another push this afternoon.
  • A prominent Facebook ‘like’ button now appears on top of every campaign page.  Please click on it.
  • Later today, I have a phone call scheduled with the AFL-CIO international department to discuss a major campaign we may need to do in defense of Georgian trade unions.
  • The review (overhaul) of our website that was due to appear in .net magazine did not appear yesterday – but the editor has assured me that it will appear in next month’s issue and apologized.
  • Now we have a correct link on every language page in LabourStart that allows you to sign up to our list in that specific language.
  • We’ve fixed the Turkish title of our conference and added a registration page in Turkish to the site.
  • I’ve completed the task of writing individual, personalized messages to every national trade union center within 1,000 km of Istanbul (that’s 20 countries).
  • We now have an online page that shows who has registered for our conference – email me if you’d like to see it and I’ll send you the URL.
