Victories in the Philippines and Turkey – and the struggle continues in Hong Kong
It’s been more than three weeks since this blog was last updated, so here goes …
Campaigns
Good news! We closed two of our campaigns after we were able to help the workers win.
Following our campaign in support of striking DHL workers in the Philippines, we received this message from the union (SENTRO): “We are pleased to share that, after 38 days of strike, the workers of the DHL United Workers Union (DUWU) have reached an agreement with management that provides a just resolution to the issues that led to the strike. This victory belongs first and foremost to the workers of the DHL Supply Chain warehouse, whose courage, unity, and determination sustained the struggle. It is also shared by everyone who stood with them in solidarity. LabourStart played a crucial role. At a critical moment in the struggle, LabourStart helped ensure that the workers’ fight in Sucat was heard far beyond the Philippines.”
And we did the same for our campaign in support of jailed union leaders in Turkey. The union wrote to us: “Limter-?? President ?leri Devrim Yurtsever was arrested on February 5, 2026, alongside other union members in an attempt to silence workers’ rights and organizing. After enduring health issues during his imprisonment, he was released at his first hearing and is currently recovering. He remains resilient and will soon return to the Tuzla shipyards to defend workers. Special thanks to LabourStart and everyone who showed solidarity!”
Our current campaign on Hong Kong is significantly larger than our other recent campaigns, with 5,318 supporters today and the text translated into 19 languages. In addition to the campaign, Eric Lee has co-authored an article with Peter Tatchell which we are trying to place in a British newspaper or magazine. We have recruited five global unions (including ITUC) as sponsors. And this week we have a meeting in the British Parliament to discuss what more we can do — details on that in the next report.
Possible upcoming campaigns include on in support of public sector unions in Nepal which are under attack, and Victoria’s Secret workers in Sri Lanka.
Fundraising
Of course we can’t do all this without money and are delighted with the support we continue to receive from individual trade unionist and from their unions. This month we did special mailings to our previous donors and nearly all our mailing lists. In addition we received generous donations from the Norwegian union Styrke and from Canada’s NUPGE.
COP31 in Antalya
As we reported previously, LabourStart is one of the sponsors of the trade union event at the Peoples Climate Summit in Turkey in next month. We’ve publicised the event and encouraged people to attend, writing to all our correspondents and a couple of our larger mailing lists.
Podcasts
We recorded an interview with Christopher Mung of the Hong Kong Labour Rights Monitor about the case of Lee (see above).
More interviews are in the pipeline.
