PledgeBank – does this sound like something useful?

I learned about PledgeBank at the recent NetRoots conference hosted by the British TUC in London.  Does anything think it would be a good idea to use this to promote LabourStart – and not only to fund us?  Looking forward to reading your comments.  (Please spend a few moments on PledgeBank first to get an idea of how it works.)

  • I’ve seen this before but can’t recall in what context. I think it could be quite effective for as long as it feels new.

On campaigning: Don’t see it. What we do now is as effective and it’s immediate (people sign on and then pass the message along or don’t). This system for campaigning would give everyone on our list two opportunities to forget to do anything in support or two chances to be too busy etc.: once when they get the message from us and a second when the pledge hits the magic number and they are reminded of their promise to support the campaign.

On soliciting donations: Won’t help much with donations from unions/GUFs etc., though perhaps it might with smaller unions or with locals/branches. But it would be worth trying to see if we can expand the number of individual donations we get. All the literature about online campaign/fundraising suggests that this works because people will make a larger than usual donation committment because in a sense they are ‘betting’ that the pledge won’t reach the magic number, but that a surprisingly high percentage pay-up when asked.

    I like the multi-lingual support already built-in.

Problem: Paypal’s limitations outseide parts of Europe and North America.
