Thursday morning in brief: campaigns and more campaigns

We are today launching a very big joint GUF campaign in support of trade union rights in Mexico.  The campaign is being launched simultaneously in 7 languages.

The ICEM has given us two campaigns to launch today – but we are holding off for a few days on the publicity blitz.  The campaigns focus on Pakistan and Turkey.

We are very close to a public announcement of our Hindi language edition.

We’ve been holding some email based discussions about the next Labour Video of the Year competition – work will begin on this in March.

It’s important that videos in non-English languages are not discriminated this time if we are to be a really global service

  • People are not going to vote for a video they don’t understand, so non english entries have lost before the competition even starts.

  • Re. the Hindi page, I really like the replication of the main page layout we have going on some of the national pages (Top Stories section and the Photo of the Week). Can that be done on the Hindi page?

  • Andy and Espen, please make a concrete suggestion how we can run a fully multilingual version of the labour video of the year – I am open to new ideas. Act on the assumption that we have no money at all, which is the case. Let’s try to think outside the box on this one.

Derek, the Hindi site is far from ready, unfortunately, but when it is, I’ll welcome comments. All the different language sites should have the same features, eventually.

  • Dandy. If Mahesh has trouble finding one I might be able to get us a volunteer to translate things like photo captions into Hindi as they change.

  • It’s not a question of translation but of numbers. Who is going to vote for a video not understanding what is said or written? We’ve already seen this with the website competition where non-English entries couldn’t even make it to the selection. Theoretically, things should go better with photos but unfortunately there was a problem there too. Perhaps we should make it clear that the competitions are English language and organize specific language based ones when we have enough readers.
