Strike at Royal Air Maroc

Casablanca, August 25th 2005

Press Release

Admittedly, most aircraft crashes these days are blamed on human factors. And according to OACI statistics the human factors are considered to be as the dominant cause of 70% of crashes especially during social conflicts intervals.

Given that 98% of Royal Air Maroc technicians have called a strike since June 29, 2005, and in view of the 5th article of STAM union statute, a press conference has been held on August 25th 2005 which had as a main topic: the close connection between air safety and aircraft maintenance.

The national and international media have overwhelmingly taken part in the conference which outlined the role of national and international civil aviation authorities as well as aircraft maintenance regulations. The conference board has also focused on the role of both the minister of supervision and the Moroccan direction de l’aéronautique civile (DAC).

The journalist’s questions reflected their anxiety and great concern about the impact of the strike on airplane safety and also the financial losses due to the resort to highly expensive French maintenance.

STAM union focused not only on the conflict as a critical situation but on the risk that it might last quite longer. And as a result the corporate image of our national airline as far as maintenance is concerned might be severely marred by suchlike internal conflict which might contaminate the safety level that gave Royal Air Maroc the opportunity to be considered as one of the safest airlines of the world and appear in the “Worldwide safe carriers white list” established by the direction générale de l’aviation civile (DGAC).

Consequently, a bigger and stronger commitment is to be worked out in order to get things back into normal condition as the safety margin is inexorably linked to the maintenance checks performed during the winter season, in on the decline for it is reaching expiration. Moreover the current maintenance is performed by a very short number of strike breakers and aircrafts are dispatched to EAS Perpignan for maintenance.

In fact, we bemoan the fact that the company’s interests, the job’s ethics and the safety standards have been overshadowed by the management obstinacy on one hand, and on the other hand by the uncritical attitude of the sector’s governing authorities.

As a conclusion, STAM board expressed a strong desire and availability to open negotiations in mutual respect for both board’s interests in order to solve the issues in suspension and restore a safe working climate.
