Egypt: Appeal for solidarity

CALL FOR TRANSPARENT INVESTIGATION

The general coordinator of the Center for Trade Union and Workers Services (CTUWS) Kamal Abbas returned home from the hospital on Saturday, 6 August to resume his treatment for at least another two weeks according to doctors' orders.

CTUWS general coordinator had been subject to a brutal assault on part of the Interior Ministry security forces within the framework of the unprecedented violent incident witnessed by downtown Cairo on Saturday, 30 July 2005. These incidents resulted in breaking Mr. Kamal Abbas' eighth and ninth ribs, in addition to some bruises in the head and back.

Egyptian relevant authorities still insist on ignoring the urgent demands made by CTUWS and other Egyptian human rights organizations for investigating the incident and holding those responsible for them accountable. A number of lawyers had filed complaint number 12453 dated 1 August 2005 to the Supreme State Security attorney general. CTUWS general coordinator Kamal Abbas later filed another complaint to the prosecutor general accompanied by the Kasr al-Aini and Salam International Hospital reports. However, no measures have been taken to date concerning the mentioned complaints. There are no signs that there is a tendency or intention to conduct an investigation concerning the facts included in the complaints.

CTUWS, affirming that it condemns all the brutal practices and violations committed on part of Egypt's police forces on Saturday, 30 July 2005, thus exceeding all limits and blatantly ignoring all international human rights treaties, renew its demand to quickly investigate the assault against CTUWS general coordinator and holding the perpetrators of such violations accountable. The required investigation should involve all necessary guarantees that it will be fair and transparent. CTUWS also calls upon you to stand in solidarity in order to achieve its urgent and fair demand.
