Indiana University's Division of Labor Studies Faces a Critical Budget Crisis, Not of its Making

The Division, like other schools on the campus of IUPUI, faces severe budget cuts as a result of actions taken by the Indiana General Assembly to reduce state spending and balance the state's budget.

In addition, the Division did not receive, as it has in past years, an annual $358,000 special appropriation in the new two-year state budget.

The Division, which has had a 323% increase in state-wide student enrollments and is one of the fastest growing and most successful programs within the Indiana University system over the last three years, is focusing on the following goals as it attempts to navigate the crisis:

· Ensure that the Certificate, Associate and Bachelor's programs remain intact.
· Allocate remaining resources to program areas within the Division that have proven to be the most successful, to ensure future continued growth and long-term survival of the Division. These areas include the Labor Studies Online program, non-credit programs, and civic engagement projects with Hoosier workers.
. Work to address the budget crisis in strict adherence to Indiana University policies and procedures.

The Division is working diligently to minimize the damage to its mission of providing credit and non-credit programs serving students and Hoosier workers, while maintaining the financial stability that will ensure future successes.

"This is one of the most critical situations the Division has ever faced. It's vitally important during this crisis that we focus on the future viability of the program as the top priority," said Chuck Davis, Director of the Division.

Davis said that maintaining the integrity and outstanding growth of the credit programs while ensuring the continuation of the non-credit extension programs that have served Hoosier workers since 1946 is a delicate balancing act. "I remain confident, that even in the face of the current situation, the Division can and will continue to build on its success of the last three years while maintaining the programs that are responsible for that success," Davis added.
