Spectacular growth for Turkish campaign

This may be unprecedented – barely 24 hours after going live, we’ve had a total of 3,512 messages sent — 3,254 of them in English, 28 in Spanish, 37 in Italian, 111 in French and 82 in Norwegian.  The largest groups of supporters come from:

  • USA 754
  • UK 668
  • Canada 616
  • Australia 562
  • Ireland 127

By way of contrast, we only have 2,788 messages sent out in support of the Oak Harbor (USA) campaign, which has been running for 24 days.  The Mexico campaign, running for nearly 3 months, still has fewer than 1,000 messages sent.  Our biggest active campaign is the Iran one, with 6,390 supporters.   It will be suspended next week after running for more than three months.

Eric Lee to visit US this week

I’ve been invited to participate in the Labor Roundtable at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations next Friday.  On Thursday, I’ll be speaking to a student-organized event in a hall that seats 140, followed by a dinner with local trade unionists.  I’m leaving London on Monday evening, back the following week on Tuesday the 25th.  Please contact me by email only if urgent.

Disappointment

We just received this email a few minutes ago:

Thank you for your recent application LabourStart 2.0: Improving and extending our news and campaigning websitefor funding through the Knight News Challenge. We have reviewed your request, and unfortunately, we must decline your application at this time. Even though you submitted a good idea, it does not meet the specific requirement of using the latest innovations in technique to inform communities.

Because there are thousands of application and only a few of them advance, we are able to choose only the most innovative ideas. These are new kinds of technologies or techniques, usually things we have never heard of before.

Please understand this does not reflect on the quality of your work. This is an extremely competitive contest. Even good applications can be declined. This particular contest can select only a tiny fraction of the most promising, innovative applications that expand digital news and information in defined geographic communities.

You can read more about the Knight News Challenge here: http://www.newschallenge.org

If you have other ideas that fall within the guidelines for the News Challenge, we encourage you to submit them.

We appreciate the value of your work and wish you success in attracting support from other sources.

Sincerely,

Knight News Challenge staff

8 days to go …

By 15 November, we will know whether we are in the running to receive $80,000 from the Knight News Challenge.  Sometime between now and then we might hear from them asking for a full proposal.  When that happens, I might call upon some of you to help review what I’ll send in.  Time will be short, as I’m travelling to the USA on the 18th.

New campaign coming up

We’ve been asked by Labour Behind the Label (part of the Clean Clothes Campaign) to prepare to do a campaign on Turkey.  In a rare case of actual planning before the event, we should have the text ready very shortly, can send it to translators, but won’t go live until 16 November.  Details to follow.

Weekly mailing

I’ve re-sent the mailing which initially went only to correspondents about the winning photo – to everyone.  It’s already gone out to the English, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish lists.

24 pages of praise

Derek has collected all the comments posted in support of our application for the $80,000 award in the News Challenge and I’ve turned this into a PDF which you can download.
