{"id":3818,"date":"2015-12-17T13:38:21","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T11:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3818"},"modified":"2015-12-17T13:38:21","modified_gmt":"2015-12-17T11:38:21","slug":"campaign-updates-from-iran-israel-china-korea-kyrgyzstan-poland-turkey-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3818","title":{"rendered":"Campaign updates from Iran, Israel, China, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Turkey &#8211; and more &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first two weeks of December were a busy time for us, especially regarding campaigns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016 conference:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Updates will appear on top of Inside LabourStart as we get them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campaigns:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the suggestion of Andy, I&#8217;ll be drawing up a short report on how we did with campaigns in 2015, and we can circulate this early in the new year to our lists.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Iran:<\/strong><\/em> At the request of the Education International we launched a campaign 3 days ago demanding the release of a jailed teacher trade unionist. But within 1 day, we received reports that he&#8217;d ended his hunger strike and was released. We are now waiting for confirmation of this and will then close the campaign.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Israel\/China:<\/strong><\/em> The deal to import tens of thousands of workers from China to Israel as bonded labour has fallen through, and as a result we&#8217;ve been asked to close the campaign. The campaign had <strong>6,263<\/strong> supporters in 14 languages despite having been online for little more than one week. We&#8217;ll be releasing a statement shortly.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Korea:<\/strong><\/em> The campaign continues to grow, and as of this morning has <strong>over 10,200<\/strong> supporters, 1,359 of whom supported the Korean-language version.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Kyrgyzstan:<\/strong> <\/em>I have asked IndustriALL for permission to close this, as more than three months have passed. We&#8217;re still waiting for a green light to do this.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Poland:<\/strong><\/em> We closed the ITF Poland campaign after three months. The campaign had <strong>7,910<\/strong> supporters; we don&#8217;t have a final message from the ITF about results of our efforts, despite having asked for such a report.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Turkey:<\/strong><\/em> We closed down the SF Leather\/Mulberry campaign after more than four months with the agreement of IndustriALL. It was a large campaign with <strong>11,571<\/strong> supporters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outreach:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have been invited next week to participation in a small workshop at the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam; they are keen to discuss their relationship with the global labour movement and the question of archives.<\/p>\n<p>In February, I&#8217;ve been invited to speak in Gdansk at a meeting of European trade union communications officers, organized by the European Trade Union Confederation and the European Trade Union Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook &amp; Twitter:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our group (not page) is increasingly dominated by a handful of individuals some of whom seem to think that we are connected somehow to the British Labour Party. I have written a sticky post on top of the group for all to see encouraging people to post items about the labour movement. It has had limited success.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, our Canadian feed on Twitter continues to thrive, with over 5,000 followers.
