{"id":3387,"date":"2014-03-25T13:31:56","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T11:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3387"},"modified":"2014-03-25T13:35:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-25T11:35:14","slug":"our-very-own-link-shortener-and-why-it-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3387","title":{"rendered":"Our very own link shortener &#8211; and why it matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/images\/yourls-logo.png\" width=\"201\" height=\"90\" \/>When we promote LabourStart campaigns on Twitter and elsewhere, we often need to shorten the link so that it will fit.<\/p>\n<p>For example, we take this link to the current Morocco call centre campaign &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=2217<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; and we shorten it using <a href=\"https:\/\/bitly.com\/shorten\/\">bit.ly<\/a> to this &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1hf7XIh<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve done this for years, and it&#8217;s a great tool.\u00a0 (We&#8217;ve used alternatives to bit.ly as well, including <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/\">tinyurl<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>But there are a couple of downsides:<\/p>\n<p>First, the URL created is not instantly <strong>memorable<\/strong>, nor would you want to <strong>say it aloud<\/strong> at a public meeting, or radio interview or over the phone.\u00a0 (Just try saying &#8220;http:\/\/bit.ly\/1hf7XIh&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>Second, to do this, we rely on <strong>external hosts<\/strong> &#8212; which we do not pay for &#8212; to <strong>relay our traffic<\/strong>.\u00a0 So far we&#8217;ve had no problems with this, but it would far better if there were a way to do this on our own server.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>In other words, LabourStart could use its own URL shortener.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>And now we have one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the people who wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/yourls.org\/\">YOURLS<\/a> I&#8217;ve now been able to create these shortened URLs easily:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/peru\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/peru<\/a> -&gt; http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=2198<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/ranaplaza\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/ranaplaza<\/a> -&gt; http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=2200<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/casablanca\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/casablanca<\/a> -&gt; http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=2217<\/p>\n<p>And we&#8217;re not limited to campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>For example, correspondents who want to login to post news now have to key in this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/dbman\/db.cgi<\/p>\n<p>This is easier to remember, and shorter:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/login\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/go\/login<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, LabourStart now has its own URL shortening system.\u00a0 And here are the advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easier to say.<\/li>\n<li>Easier to remember.<\/li>\n<li>Fits better onto a tweet.<\/li>\n<li>More secure and reliable than an external host.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, preserves our branding &#8212; labourstart instead of labourstartcampaigns.net.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we promote LabourStart campaigns on Twitter and elsewhere, we often need to shorten the link so that it will fit.
