{"id":3353,"date":"2014-02-20T15:56:02","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T13:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3353"},"modified":"2014-03-07T11:05:25","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T09:05:25","slug":"the-weeks-in-review-7-20-february-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=3353","title":{"rendered":"The weeks in review &#8211; 7-20 February 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/berlin-logo-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3354\" alt=\"berlin-logo-300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/berlin-logo-300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Berlin conference:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> We&#8217;ve made lots of progress on a wide range of issues, most of the work having been done by the organizing committee in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re now up to <strong>352<\/strong> registered participants from <strong>58 countries<\/strong> with the largest groups coming from Germany (77), the UK (49) and Nigeria (31).<\/p>\n<p>Because of the very large number of people who&#8217;ve signed up to come from Africa, we&#8217;ve actually done a mailing to all of them and have recruited some new correspondents.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve also been warned that some of these will not be representatives of genuine independent and democratic trade unions and are showing caution in who gets invitation letters (to get a visa into Germany).<\/p>\n<p>Because of number of registrants we did consider moving the conference to a larger venue, but the majority of members of the organizing committee decided to stick with our current venue.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still putting together the agenda, organizing solidarity housing for the 147 registrants who requested it, working on the visas, dealing with interpretation into the various languages, and much more.<\/p>\n<p><em>Only 3 months to go!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Campaigns:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It seems like we&#8217;re about to launch a new campaign in support of workers in Korea &#8212; details coming soon.<\/li>\n<li>We were going to close down <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=2053\">the Sri Lanka campaign<\/a> today, after three months, but IndustriALL has requested an extension.<\/li>\n<li>We received a lovely email from the union at the Labatt brewery where our campaign helped them win their very long strike &#8212; and we emailed our entire list about this win.<\/li>\n<li>We also received a message updating the Huber Ballesteros campaign (see below).<\/li>\n<li>We closed two campaigns &#8212; Mexico and a UK-only campaign but haven&#8217;t gotten updates back from either union.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very important that unions which request campaigns from us report back to us on a regular basis and particularly when a campaign ends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>New language:<\/strong><\/em> We now have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/2013\/index.php?langcode=hu\">LabourStart in Hungarian<\/a> &#8212; with some news already added by our only senior correspondent who speaks the language &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>News interface:<\/strong><\/em> Now available in Italian for our Italian-speaking correspondents.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>MailChimp:<\/strong><\/em> We&#8217;ve had our first mailings done by users other than me (which I need to approve) and these have been successful.\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to share the load here.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Donations:<\/strong><\/em> I&#8217;ve now fixed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/donatenow.html\">the donations page<\/a> so that if you&#8217;re donating in US dollars, the USA becomes your default country; if in Australian dollars, Australia is your default country, and so on.\u00a0 This had been causing problems for some Americans trying to donate by credit card via PayPal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Berlin conference:\u00a0 We&#8217;ve made lots of progress on a wide range of issues, most of the work having been done by the organizing committee in Berlin.
