{"id":2981,"date":"2013-06-10T09:24:04","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T07:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2013-06-10T09:26:55","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T07:26:55","slug":"the-week-in-review-29-may-10-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2981","title":{"rendered":"The week in review &#8211; 29 May &#8211; 10 June"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Campaigns<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nTurkey &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1840\">This<\/a> is the big one, likely to become the largest campaign we&#8217;ve ever done, and possibly even reach my personal goal of 20,000 messages sent, sometime this week.\u00a0 Lots of updates below.<br \/>\nSmall screen version goes live &#8211; Our campaigns now look MUCH better on smartphones and tablets, a first example of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/alistapart.com\/article\/responsive-web-design\">responsive web design<\/a>&#8221; on LabourStart, with more to come.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Berlin 2014<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nEdd and I drafted a very short document explaining what we&#8217;re hoping to achieve in Berlin at next year&#8217;s LabourStart Global Solidarity Conference.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll be having a phone call with the ITUC today and a meeting with Gisela, who is based in Berlin, in two weeks, in London.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Publicity<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve been running a Facebook ad campaign for nearly 3 weeks now.\u00a0 It&#8217;s cost us <strong>$288.00<\/strong>, the ads have been seen by <strong>68,389<\/strong> people in the UK and Germany, and we&#8217;ve picked up <strong>677<\/strong> new &#8216;likes&#8217;.\u00a0 As a result of this, we now have <strong>1,694<\/strong> likes from the UK and <strong>185<\/strong> from Germany &#8212; making it our 6th strongest country.<br \/>\nAs reported below, we got good publicity in the German\/Austrian Esperanto magazine.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Books<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nBook sales continue to be slow.\u00a0 In June, we sold only <strong>19<\/strong> copies of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.createspace.com\/4252731\">Global Labour Movement book<\/a>, and <strong>4<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.createspace.com\/4104805\">Campaigning and Winning<\/a> (all in English).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Site traffic<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nAs reported below, we&#8217;ve started using Clicky to provide real-time updates on traffic to our sites.\u00a0 It was quite fun to watch a world map light up when we launched the Turkey campaign.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Internationalization<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve identified 11 &#8220;dormant languages&#8221; on our news pages where correspondents have ceased to be active.\u00a0 We prioritized six of these (Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, Farsi, Italian) and have posted a message on each one explaining that the page is not currently being updated, but asking for volunteers to help.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve also begun writing to each mailing list in these languages and have already gotten some new correspondents.<br \/>\nWe have been able to do those mailings and post messages in those languages because we have picked up a number of new volunteer translators.\u00a0 We did this by writing to people from different countries who had signed up to the English language version of our Turkey campaign.\u00a0 As a result, we have an unprecedented <strong>24<\/strong> languages for the Turkey campaign.<br \/>\nFinally, we continue to constantly update our news pages.\u00a0 Most recently, our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/2013\/country.php?country=Canada&amp;langcode=fr\">French-language Canada page<\/a> is shaping up well, with top stories now for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Events<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nWe now have a proper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/2013\/suggestevent.php\">form to submit events<\/a> and people have begun submitting them.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll set this up so that events for specific countries are automatically sent by email to the appropriate editors who will decide what to post.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll begin publicity to all our correspondents and subscribers once things quiet down a bit here &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigns Turkey &#8211; This is the big one, likely to become the largest campaign we&#8217;ve ever done, and possibly even reach my personal goal of 20,000 messages sent, sometime this week.\u00a0 Lots of updates below.
