{"id":2852,"date":"2013-03-20T18:35:10","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T16:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2852"},"modified":"2013-03-20T18:35:10","modified_gmt":"2013-03-20T16:35:10","slug":"what-subject-lines-work-best-for-our-mailings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2852","title":{"rendered":"What subject lines work best for our mailings?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone has an opinion about this, but for the first time, LabourStart has done what&#8217;s called A\/B testing on one of our regular mailings.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, we told MailChimp to write to 10% of the people on our list with one subject line, used a different subject line for another 10%, and then wait 24 hours. \u00a0The content of the message stayed the same. \u00a0The subject line that generated the most opens was then automatically selected for the remaining 80% of the list.<\/p>\n<p>The results were as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When the subject line was\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Victory: Valentin Urusov and Basile Mahan Gah\u00e9 are now free<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">14.5%<\/span><\/strong> of the recipients opened the message &#8211; a total of <strong>1,116<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>When the subject line didn&#8217;t include their names &#8212; it was simply\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Victory: Jailed union leaders freed <\/em><\/strong><\/span>&#8212; <strong>15.5%<\/strong> of the recipients opened the message, a total of <strong>1,190<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, the subject line that was free of names generated <strong>74<\/strong> more opens than the other, which would have translated to <strong>740<\/strong>\u00a0additional opens over the entire list.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a massive difference, but it&#8217;s interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing we may want to test is whether mentioning a country name helps or hinders (e.g., <em>Union leaders jailed<\/em> vs <em>Korean union leaders jailed<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone has an opinion about this, but for the first time, LabourStart has done what&#8217;s called A\/B testing on one of our regular mailings.
