{"id":2797,"date":"2013-02-22T15:01:29","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T13:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2797"},"modified":"2013-02-22T15:01:29","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T13:01:29","slug":"the-shock-of-the-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2797","title":{"rendered":"The shock of the new"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what our website looks like today:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/old.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2798\" alt=\"old\" src=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/old.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the new design, largely completed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/new.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2799\" alt=\"new\" src=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/new.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can view the old home page <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\">here<\/a> and the new one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/2013\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some things to note about the new design and why I believe it is a huge improvement over the existing design (which is not to say that it is perfect):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is considerably <strong>more white space<\/strong> for a much less cluttered look.<\/li>\n<li>More prominence is given to <strong>images<\/strong> (photo of the day, campaign photo).<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a much <strong>reduced colour palette<\/strong> (no more pinks, blues, oranges, etc.) and <strong>single font<\/strong> for the whole page.<\/li>\n<li>The technology back-end of the page is largely <strong>future-proof<\/strong>, as it was written in HTML 5, uses CSS and is based on PHP &#8211; it&#8217;s completely modular and it will be relatively easy to base all the languages on this model.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ve <strong>de-cluttered<\/strong> &#8212; there&#8217;s far less happening on the front page, and nearly all the links will now be moved to other pages. \u00a0The key stuff &#8211; news, campaigns, labour history and photo &#8211; are the only things staying on the front page.<\/li>\n<li>Yes, there&#8217;s <strong>a new logo<\/strong> too. \u00a0For the first time since 1998.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We&#8217;re not going live with this just yet &#8212; let&#8217;s have a discussion here, in the comments, before we do anything rash.<\/p>\n<p>I know that I&#8217;m taking a risk with all this, as people have very different tastes and some of you will think this looks horrible while others think it looks great. \u00a0What I&#8217;m looking for is constructive criticism &#8212; things that you&#8217;d like dropped, improved, added, displayed differently, and so on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what our website looks like today: &nbsp; And here&#8217;s the new design, largely completed: &nbsp; You can view the old home page here and the new one here.
