{"id":2787,"date":"2013-02-19T13:43:01","date_gmt":"2013-02-19T11:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2787"},"modified":"2013-02-19T14:28:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-19T12:28:57","slug":"weekly-review-13-19-february-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2787","title":{"rendered":"Weekly review &#8211; 13-19 February 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Annual survey of trade union use of the net:<\/strong> This went live in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/GC9BBCW\">English<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/N5SQCN5\">French<\/a> editions about 24 hours ago. \u00a0So far, there have been <strong>271<\/strong> responses. \u00a0Last year we got 2,954 over the course of a month, and the year before that, 1,336.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Site re-design:<\/strong>\u00a0Work has resumed on this and significant progress made. \u00a0We&#8217;ll have a more attractive site to show in a few days. \u00a0For those of you desperate to see the work-in-progress, email me and I&#8217;ll tell you where to look.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campaigns:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New campaigns:<\/strong> We&#8217;re launching two new campaigns this week specifically for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1737\">Canada (on behalf of COPE)<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1738\">UK (on behalf of RMT)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viewing campaign supporters:<\/strong> Some time ago we made it so that you needed a password to view the list of campaign supporters. \u00a0The problem was, you needed to embed that password in the URL. \u00a0This is now user-friendly; you can key in the password directly onto the page, in a form.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Campaigns landing page:<\/strong> This now works in French &#8211;\u00a0modeled\u00a0on the English version. \u00a0We&#8217;ll eventually have this working for all languages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New languages for campaigns and mailing lists:<\/strong> We now have a significant mailing list for <strong>Tagalog<\/strong> (191 addresses). \u00a0Our <strong>Czech<\/strong> friends have completed translations so we now have a couple of campaigns and have done a mailing in Czech (95 subscribers). \u00a0We \u00a0have three volunteers signed up to help coordinate translations of our campaigns into <strong>Esperanto<\/strong>; they&#8217;ve formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/forum\/?fromgroups&amp;hl=de#!forum\/labourstart-tradukgrupo\">Google Group<\/a> to share the effort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Books:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Book 1:<\/strong> The Kindle edition of our book (<em><strong>Campaigning Online and Winning<\/strong><\/em>) \u00a0is now live and has been promoted. \u00a0Sales of the paperback edition are now well above 500. \u00a0We&#8217;re waiting for the French and German translations. \u00a0We&#8217;ve essentially run out of the 100 copies we bought for the office, and have ordered &#8211; and received &#8211; 100 more. A review is appearing in the next edition of <em><strong>Labor Notes<\/strong><\/em>, in the USA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book 2:<\/strong> Edd and I are in the advanced stages of planning for this one &#8212; more details very soon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book 3:<\/strong> I completed and submitted my manuscript to UCS 12 days ago &#8212; waiting to hear from them what else they need, and a schedule. \u00a0The working title is <strong><em>Making Unions Stronger &#8211; Using the Internet Better<\/em><\/strong>, but this will change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>News database:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Countries list for news database:<\/strong> There were several versions of this &#8212; you could, for example, add a story for a new country such as &#8220;South Sudan&#8221;, and that country was one of the options, but that name didn&#8217;t appear in the list of countries on the front page of LabourStart. \u00a0This has now been fixed &#8212; both scripts are now reading from the same file.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Languages for posting news:<\/strong> While it was possible to post to LabourStart in some 50 languages, we have only about 30 translated front pages &#8212; so if you posted a news story in, say, Urdu, it entered the database and would have appeared if you searched for news in all languages &#8212; but was not tagged in our database with any specific language. \u00a0This has now been fixed, and every story in the database from now on is tagged with a language code.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Newswires for all 50 US states:<\/strong> We now have this &#8212; previously we had for fewer than a dozen. \u00a0Now we have to think about how to publicize this &#8211; it could be useful for local unions, state federations, and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fundraising:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fundraising:<\/strong> I wrote to every global union federation last week; only two have responded, one with a promise to donate more than last year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fundraising evening in London:<\/strong>\u00a0We&#8217;re making plans to hold this on 27 April &#8211; details coming soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Annual survey of trade union use of the net: This went live in English and French editions about 24 hours ago. \u00a0So far, there have been 271 responses. \u00a0Last year we got 2,954 over the course of a month, and the year before that, 1,336.
