{"id":2562,"date":"2012-08-11T09:05:31","date_gmt":"2012-08-11T07:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2562"},"modified":"2012-08-11T09:08:39","modified_gmt":"2012-08-11T07:08:39","slug":"weekly-update-6-10-august-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2562","title":{"rendered":"Weekly update, 6-10 August 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Campaigns:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I cleared the backlog of translations of campaigns and mass mailings.<\/li>\n<li>Two new campaigns were launched &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1519\">Swaziland<\/a> (7 August) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1524\">Turkey DHL<\/a> (8 August).<\/li>\n<li>I fixed the mycampaigns.cgi script &#8212; while it was working OK, it was forcing the system to use the old website addresses and forwarding.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1390\">Iraq campaign<\/a> was closed with fewer than 4,000 messages sent.<\/li>\n<li>We assisted Unite Here and the IUF with promoting their own campaigns this week; in the former case, this also consisted in giving them a lot of constructive criticism about how to campaign globally.<\/li>\n<li>Two campaigns were given a special boost this week &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1484\">RMT campaign in support of London cleaners<\/a> on Friday when a 48 strike as launched with picketing outside the Olympics venue, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstartcampaigns.net\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1402\">Hava-Is campaign for Turkish airline workers<\/a> &#8211; because of the new ITF video. \u00a0The last of these is our largest campaign at the moment, with well over 8,000 messages sent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Ukrainian edition:<\/em><\/strong> I added 9 correspondents &#8211; Masha is co-ordinating this effort. \u00a0The interface is already working.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/londonlabourfilmfest.com\/\"><strong><em>London Labour Film Festival<\/em><\/strong><\/a>: I&#8217;ve been promoting this to our lists and via social media. \u00a0LabourStart is getting a quarter-page ad in the festival program. \u00a0We are also allowed to distribute our brochure at the door. \u00a0The festival takes place in mid-September at the Prince Charles Cinema in central London.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>App<\/em><\/strong>: We&#8217;ve been sent an interesting proposal by a company in Canada offering to do this for us; now under consideration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Conference 2012<\/em><\/strong>: Now little more than 3 months away. \u00a0The organizing committee is meeting again next week. \u00a0A draft registration form is now ready and a bank account has been set up. \u00a0Proposals are being discussed for panels.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Conference 2013<\/em><\/strong>: There&#8217;s been an offer to host this in Vancouver. \u00a0More details soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Office in London<\/em><\/strong>: I continue to search &#8211; have found one very good candidate on Thursday, am looking at another on Monday and will probably decide then. \u00a0Packing up of the existing office has already begun.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fund-raising<\/em><\/strong>: We received a substantial one-off donation from the IUF.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Upcoming conferences I&#8217;ve been invited to speak at<\/em><\/strong>: UNITE Wales in Cardiff in September (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/fiftyshadesofcampaigning.wordpress.com\/\">Fifty shades of campaigning<\/a>&#8220;); NASUWT in London in November; <a href=\"http:\/\/lawcha.nfshost.com\/wordpress\/2012\/05\/21\/save-the-date-lawcha-national-conference-2013-june-6-7-nyc\/\">Labor and Working Class History Association (LAWCHA)<\/a> in New York City next June. \u00a0(I will be contacting some of you for help on organizing a panel for the last of these.) \u00a0I also hope to attend the TUC in Brighton in early September. \u00a0These are all also opportunities to distribute the LabourStart brochure (1,900+ copies remaining).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Other writing: <\/em><\/strong>The current wave of anti-union repression we&#8217;re seeing in places like Nigeria and Turkey is the subject of my next regular monthly column for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/?cat=37\">Jungle World<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigns: I cleared the backlog of translations of campaigns and mass mailings.
