{"id":2215,"date":"2012-04-01T10:49:25","date_gmt":"2012-04-01T08:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2215"},"modified":"2012-04-01T10:49:25","modified_gmt":"2012-04-01T08:49:25","slug":"unexpected-results-from-last-mass-mailing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2215","title":{"rendered":"Unexpected results from last mass mailing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/test.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2216\" title=\"abdolreza, kamal, matteo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/test.png\" alt=\"abdolreza, kamal, matteo\" width=\"500\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/test.png 500w, https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/test-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is odd, I think.<\/p>\n<p>I did a mailing 43 hours ago to our list of 71,401 subscribers in English. \u00a0(It&#8217;s also gone out to the French and Spanish lists more recently.) \u00a0The mailing reported on the victory in the Auckland lock-out, and urged supporters to sign up to three selected urgent actions campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>I listed these in the following order &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1299\">Abdolreza Ghanbari<\/a> (by far the most popular campaign), then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1287\">Kamal Abbas<\/a> (the third largest of the three, in urgent need of many more supporters) and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1271\">Matteo Parlati<\/a> (whose campaign was stronger than the Abbas one but still considerably smaller than the Ghanbari one).<\/p>\n<p>Because in most mailings, the links which appear first get the most clicks and the ones which appear last get the least, I assumed that the Ghanbari campaign would do best &#8212; and not only because it appeared first, but also because it is such a popular cause.<\/p>\n<p>But the actual gains for the campaigns in the last 43 hours have been as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Matteo Parlati &#8211; 323<\/li>\n<li>Kamal Abbas &#8211; 252<\/li>\n<li>Abdolreza Ghanbari &#8211; 220<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, people signed up to support the campaigns in the opposite order to the one I listed them in. \u00a0And the most popular of the campaigns actually got the least support from this mailing. \u00a0The differences are significant &#8212; nearly 50% more supporters for the Parlati campaign than the Ghanbari one. \u00a0These are, therefore, unexpected results.<\/p>\n<p>So why did they happen?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my guess:<\/p>\n<p>I think that the list may be <strong>exhausted<\/strong> when it comes to the Ghanbari appeal, as we&#8217;ve mentioned it in three previous mailings &#8211; this was the <strong>fourth<\/strong> mention.<\/p>\n<p>And I think that we picked up many, many <strong>new subscribers<\/strong> due to that appeal &#8211; so they will not have been familiar with the Abbas and Parlati cases, having joined the mailing list only recently.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also possible that the <strong>descriptions<\/strong> I gave of the three cases made the Parlati one sound the most compelling. \u00a0Here&#8217;s how I described them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1299\">Abdolreza Ghanbari<\/a>, facing the death penalty in Iran<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1287\">Kamal Abbas<\/a>, who faces prison in Egypt for &#8220;insulting&#8221; a Mubarak-era hack at an ILO conference<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1271\">Matteo Parlati<\/a>, the shop steward at Ferrari, facing prosecution for participating in an anti-fascist demonstration in Italy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One final thought: even the gain of 323 new supporters for Matteo Parlati, welcome though that is, is only a tiny fraction of what we&#8217;d get for a new campaign. \u00a0It&#8217;s less than one-half of one percent. \u00a0My hope had been that the win in Auckland would inspire people to respond, to want to do more. \u00a0But that didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0<strong> Over 99% of the people on the list didn&#8217;t respond to this appeal at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is odd, I think.
