{"id":2065,"date":"2012-01-19T13:43:46","date_gmt":"2012-01-19T11:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2065"},"modified":"2012-01-19T13:54:37","modified_gmt":"2012-01-19T11:54:37","slug":"tracking-where-our-campaign-supporters-come-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=2065","title":{"rendered":"Tracking where our campaign supporters come from"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We know, sort of, that our mass mailings generate the vast majority of supporters for any of our campaigns. \u00a0And that things like links on websites, Twitter and Facebook are somewhat over-rated in this sense. \u00a0But to prove it &#8212; and to find out how people really do come to our campaigns and sign up &#8212; I&#8217;ve just written some code that allows us to track exactly this.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, when we tell people about a campaign we give out this code (for example) &#8212; I&#8217;ve had to break this into 2 lines to make it readable:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1239<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; line-height: 19px; white-space: normal;\">Now we have the option of adding on a parameter &#8212; done like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">solidarityforever\/show_campaign.cgi?c=1239<strong>&amp;src=test<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>This tells our system that the <strong>source<\/strong> of this visit to our campaign is from &#8220;<strong>test<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s very important to do the code exactly like that, with no spaces at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can see an example of how we can track this, starting today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/showsupporters.pl?c=1239&amp;sort=date\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Scroll to the very bottom and look at record 4187 (my name). \u00a0See the red text? \u00a0That&#8217;s because I used the link ending in &#8220;&amp;src=test&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to try this out today using a few online tools. \u00a0You should see results soon by scrolling down to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/cgi-bin\/solidarityforever\/showsupporters.pl?c=1231&amp;sort=date\">the bottom of this page<\/a>. \u00a0Make sure to refresh the page to see new supporters. \u00a0I&#8217;ve used the following codes: unionbook, twitter, lsfbpage and lsfbgroup.
