{"id":1273,"date":"2010-07-27T10:51:45","date_gmt":"2010-07-27T08:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=1273"},"modified":"2010-07-27T10:53:22","modified_gmt":"2010-07-27T08:53:22","slug":"the-state-of-our-campaigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/?p=1273","title":{"rendered":"The state of our campaigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the moment we&#8217;re running seven campaigns at once &#8212; this is quite a lot for us &#8212; and they differ wildly in the number of messages sent. \u00a0Here are the campaigns, the number of messages sent, and when they were launched &#8212; in order of popularity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iran: Farzad Kamangar executed &#8211; 6,608 (11.5)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>China: Foxconn suicides &#8211; 5,411 (28.5)<\/li>\n<li>Taiwan: Touch panel workers &#8211; 4,043 (21.4)<\/li>\n<li>Algeria: Union HQ shut down &#8211; 2,668 (25.5)<\/li>\n<li>Iraq: Minister closes union offices &#8211; 2,554 (23.7)<\/li>\n<li>South Africa: Dis-Chem strike &#8211; 1,831 (9.6)<\/li>\n<li>Turkey: Free jailed trade unionists &#8211; 1,560 (2.7)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Some quick observations:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Deaths of workers prompt larger responses in campaigns.<\/strong> The top two campaigns are both attempts to prevent further deaths (and executions, in the case of Iran) and it&#8217;s not surprising that they are the largest campaigns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong><strong>ampaigns that seem to be unending, or continuations of previous campaigns under a new guise, do poorly<\/strong> &#8212; hence the poor response to the Turkish campaign which follows several others on the same theme.<\/li>\n<li>Campaigns that seem to solely focus on<strong> ordinary bread-and-butter disputes<\/strong> (such as the South African Dis-Chem dispute) don&#8217;t do as well as those that focus on <strong>workers&#8217; rights<\/strong> issues.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, we have to take into account that <strong>effective partners make for successful campaigns<\/strong> &#8212; there is no doubt that we have been helped on the China and Taiwan campaigns with energetic support from unions in the region, whereas the Dis-Chem campaign has attracted the support of only 15 people in South Africa (more than 99% of the support comes from outside the country). \u00a0In the Taiwan campaign, close to 240 of the supporters come from China and Taiwan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the moment we&#8217;re running seven campaigns at once &#8212; this is quite a lot for us &#8212; and they differ wildly in the number of messages sent. \u00a0Here are the campaigns, the number of messages sent, and when they were launched &#8212; in order of popularity: Iran: Farzad Kamangar executed &#8211; 6,608 (11.5) China: [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1273"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1273"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1273\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1277,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1273\/revisions\/1277"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1273"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1273"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.labourstart.org\/blogs\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1273"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
