Silent Classics of Russian Revolutionary Cinema

Before Stalin succeeded in turning all cultural works into means of rendering him praise, the Russian Revolution managed to produce some extraordinary things -- especially in cinema. Here is a selection of some of the very best.

    Sergei Eisenstein's debut feature is a still-powerful, vivid account of a 1912 factory workers strike in tsarist Russia and its violent suppression. An appropriate prelude to his masterpiece, Potemkin.

    From maggots in the food to mutiny on deck, a classic work of revolutionary cinema based on events which took place in Russia's abortive 1905 revolution.

  3. Storm Over Asia - Restored Version (1928, Russia) $25.49

    A renegade Mongol trapper escapes the control of manipulative western traders and joins up with the new Soviet resistance, only to be captured by occupying forces hoping to use the young descendent of Genghis Khan for political gain. A landmark silent adventure with obvious allegorical overtones, from the Soviet avant-garde movement. Fully restored to its original length from a mint 35mm print, with a new Timothy Brock score performed by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra.

  4. Ten Days that Shook the World (1927, Russia) $33.99

    The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 is the background for this silent Russian film; a follow-up to "Battleship Potemkin" and one of the best of early film-making history. with music. Based on the book by American journalist John Reed. Narrated by Orson Welles.

  5. The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty (1927, Russia) $25.49

    Directed by Esfir Shub.

  6. The End of St. Petersburg (1927, Russia) $25.49

    A peasant comes to St. Petersburg to find work. He unwittingly helps in the arrest of an old village friend who is now a labor leader. The unemployed peasant is also arrested and sent to fight in World War I. After three years, he returns ready for revolution.

  7. Earth (1930, Russia) $25.49

    Controversial account of collectivization of agriculture in Ukraine.

  8. Three Songs of Lenin (1934, Russia) $25.49

    Three anonymous songs about Lenin provide the basis for this documentary that celebrates the achievements of the Soviet Union and Lenin's role in creating them.
