All the songs playing today on Radio LabourStart are either in languages other than English, or come from countries in the developing world. Today you can hear labour songs in French, Spanish, Dutch, Korean, Yiddish, German, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Swedish, as well as live performances of South African labour music. Missing your Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan? Don't worry -- we'll still play those every other day of the week. But today, let's remember that ours is a global movement.
We're very pleased to have acquired two CDs of Thai labour songs which we'll very soon be playing on Radio LabourStart. Stay tuned.
Today's playlist now includes the song "Bread and Roses", as performed by Choir Choir Pants on Fire on their album, Working Girl Blues. Choir Choir Pants on Fire is a New Zealand trade union women's choir -- one of several such choirs we are featuring on Radio LabourStart,
"No nos moveran" -- that's the Spanish language version of a classic song, sung on countless picket lines. The music will be familiar even to those of you who don't understand the Spanish lyrics. And the singer -- the incomparable Joan Baez. Now playing every Wednesday on Radio LabourStart.
Thanks to everyone who has sent in CDs. As some of you may know, I was away travelling and a backlog has built up. But be patient -- we're going to be playing many more union songs in the days and weeks to come.
Last month, one of you wrote in to say what a difficult time you'd been having trying to listen to our station. Having just experienced a computer crash, and having to re-set up the tools I use to listen to Radio LabourStart, I thought I'd share with you what I did, step by step.
1. Go here to launch our station from within Live365's website.
2. If you're using Mozilla Firefox with a pop-up blocker, as I do, you'll get an error message. Ignore it.
3. If you're not yet a registered user of Live365, register. But you don't need to download their software.
4. On the Live365 page for Radio LabourStart, you should see the option "Listen Settings" near the top of the page. Click on it.
5. Under 'MP3 Player', select the option 'MP3 Player'.
6. Now when you click on the big yellow 'Play' button, it will launch your MP3 client software (for example, WinAmp) every time.
Works for me.
