I am writing to offer you my deepest sympathies following the death of Hadi Salih. I met Hadi last month in Baghdad. I was struck by his dedication to the people of Iraq, and the labour movement in that country over many decades.
I know that he was imprisoned by the former Baathist regime, escaped execution and had to live in exile for many years, returning to Iraq to help his countrymen build peace and democracy.
His death is an atrocity and those who murdered him have deprived Iraq of a decent and committed man at a time when such people are needed the most.
I would be grateful if you could pass on my sincerest condolences to Hadi Salih
