Experience MattersThis ad was produced entirely in-house by the USW Communications department to support locked-out members at Honeywell's uranium processing facility in Metropolis, IL.Honeywell's use of inexperienced, temporary workers at the uranium facility potentially puts tens of thousands of people at risk of a serious accident. We call on our state and federal regulators and our elected leaders to engage in serious investigations into safety at Metropolis Works and to take all legal actions to keep our communities safe, and we say to Honeywell, "It's time to end the lockout and bring back experienced USW workers."

"Strike Me Pink"More than 400 Sydney wharfies at the Patrick Terminal at Port Botany were today kitted out in new hot pink hard hats bearing the McGrath Foundation logo, proving once and for all that real men do wear pink. The teaming of the Maritime Union and Patrick Terminals to adopt the pink safety helmets came through workers wanting to show their support of the McGrath Foundation on the job site every day.Co-founder and Chairman of the Foundation, Glenn McGrath, on hand at the terminal, was thrilled to be able to help the Patrick dock workers show their support through the new hats. Jane would have loved to have seen the Patrick's wharfies stepping up to the docks in their McGrath Pink Hard Hats, to set such a good example for other Aussie blokes - that it takes a real man to wear pink - one of Jane's favourite sayings, McGrath said.As experienced at the Sydney Test in January, we couldn't be more proud to see Australian men wanting to take a stand to wear pink to promote breast awareness and show their support for the women in their life, as breast cancer is not just a women's issue, it affects families, he said. Straddle driver and MUA member, Aaron More, found his inspiration for the initiative watching that Sydney Test and initially looked at more traditional fundraising ideas such as gold coin donations or BBQ s. But we actually really wanted something that showed our support 365 days of the year, rather than a one-off token gesture. The McGrath Pink Hard Hats will be a reminder each and every day that we support the McGrath Foundation cause and are helping educate Australian women and their partners, said More. Crane driver and one of seven women who work at the terminal, Mich-Elle Myers, said that the female workers at Port Botany were inspired by the mens decision. Some of our men have experienced breast cancer first hand, through their sisters, mothers and girlfriends. We are so proud of what they have done, Myers said. Terminal HR Manager of Patrick Terminals, John Fletcher, issued a challenge to workers from terminals across Australia, to prove they are also real men. Its our hope that Patrick's dock workers will stand out from the crowd in their new McGrath Pink Hard Hats reminding Australians from all walks of life that breast awareness leads to early detection, which can save lives.McGrath also announced today the release of McGrath Pink Safety Vest, with Visy Recycling the first company to issue the vests for all of their on-site visitors and contractors to their plants the only pink safety vest available which meets all Australian Safety Standards. While the new McGrath pink safety range will promote valuable breast awareness, a donation will be made to the McGrath Foundation for each hard hat and safety vest sold, helping fund additional McGrath Breast Care Nurses across Australia.Produced by Jamie McMechan Maritime Union of Australia Film Unit.

Transport Workers Unite - UPS ProtestThe Australian Transport Union Federation (ATUF) held a protest outside the UPS depot in Botany to support and ITF international day of action against the company after it intimidated and sacked workers in Turkey.Newly elected ITF President and National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, Paddy Crumlin, said that 157 workers had been sacked since April in an attempt to de-unionise the workforce."Here we have a multi-national corporation making millions of dollars a year while workers are forced to work up to 80 hour weeks for a paltry wage," Mr Crumlin said."There are reports coming back to the ITF telling us that management has used firearms on a picket line in Izmir. This is disgraceful conduct and unions around the world are sending a message today that this behaviour will not be tolerated," Mr Crumlin said. The Australian protest is kicking off a day of action across the globe with Transport unions in the USA, Netherlands, Hong Kong, South Africa and Argentina confirming their protest actions.ITF Vice President and TWU National Secretary, Tony Sheldon, said that the intimidation and bullying by the company was not acceptable."We are seeing drivers in Turkey finish their days work and get directed on an overnight trip to other major cities throughout the country," Mr Sheldon said."There are drivers getting their pay docked if they stop for a toilet break - these pressures can only lead to unsafe working practices and deaths on the roads, and that is a major concern."The management and employees of UPS in Australia needs to be aware of what is happening in other parts of the world. These workers need to be reinstated immediately and we will be sending the message up the management structure that the actions can't be condoned and need to be stopped," Mr Sheldon said.TUF's membership includes the Rail Tram and Bus Union, the Maritime Union of Australia and the Transport Workers Union of Australia.Produced by Jamie McMechan and Zoe Reynolds Maritime Union of Australia - Film Unit.

Shame BHP Shame - WorkChoices RevisitedOver 200 union members gathered outside the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) this morning, where MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin said unions worked to help set up the billion-dollar facility and the non-union agreement is a slap in the face to Newcastle workers."We're here to send a clear message to Peabody, BHP, some of the biggest mining companies in the world - it's not good enough," he said."If you come to this area you've got to pay the going rate and you've got to treat your workers with respect."Premier Kristina Keneally decided to boycott the opening ceremony, ABC Radio report. She says that while the coal loader is a huge economic boost for the region, she is disappointed in the arrangements made by the NCIG."I have never supported WorkChoices and I never will," she said."I'm disappointed that NCIG signed up to a WorkChoices contract arrangement in the dying days of that industrial relations system."I've expressed that to NCIG and I'm encouraging them to continue to work with the union movement."Meanwhile, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says today signifies a dark day for Newcastle and the environment. The words "Quit Coal" have been painted in large white letters on the side of a ship that is docked at the new loader. The new coal terminal opening was snubbed by politicians, unions, and environmentalists. The BHP-lead consortium Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group coal terminal has been taking ships for several weeks, but today underwent its official opening.Today's protest was organised by the Transport Union Federation (TUF).Produced by Jamie McMechan Maritime Union of Australia Film Unit.

Fallen Comrades Memorial ServiceNSW Premier Kristina Keneally expressed deep sorrow over the death of Maritime Worker Stephen Piper and the awful statistic of 3 deaths on Australian wharves in 5 months. The Premier was visibly moved as Mich-Elle Myers read the email written by Fremantle waterside worker Ash Huish, the message encapsulated in "No family should sit and wait at the end of the working day for a loved one who never returns". Ash's words were recited at every service around the country.Unions leant their support headed by Unions NSW's Secretary Mark Lennon. Wharfies and their families held up banners with the faces of 8 workers killed on the wharves in less than 10 years. One of those bore the smiling face of Nick Fanos, crushed to death at Port Botany in April. Nick's sister Maria bravely held up his banner. The Sydney service was repeated across the country, lead by the highly emotional and dignified funeral in the Boyd Chapel, Springvale in Melbourne. National Secretary Paddy Crumlin said that the church service was a celebration of the wonderful life of a loving dad and husband. "It was about family and friends from the wharves and all walks of life. They paid homage to the joyful and generous character that was Steven Piper", said Crumlin. A full service could not hold some 200 wharfies who gathered outside the church. The mourners included ACTU President Ged Kearney and former National Secretary John Coombs, arm in arm with his wife Gwen. Kearney subsequently sent out a press release calling for "workplace safety on Australian waterfronts to be overhauled to stem the mounting death toll among stevedoring workers".Over 1000 workers attended the Fremantle service led by a number of politicians including the leader of the opposition Eric Ripper, ALP Canning candidate, Alannah McTiernan and Fremantle Federal MP Melissa Page, as well as reassuring words from Father Patrick Moore of the Stella Maris Seafarers Centre. "There was a lot of sorrow and just as much anger from workers. There was a feeling that everyone has had enough, that we can't wait for this to happen again", said West Australian Branch Secretary Chris Cain.Even on a public holiday in Darwin 60 wharfies attended a service that ended in a wreath floating in the sea off Stokes Hill wharf. In Brisbane the ALP candidate for Wright Andrew Ramsay was among the mourners.Townsville wharfies from all sites in the port attended the service which was also attended by representatives from local unions from the Trades and Labour Council."Wharfies speak emotionally and with concern about what's happening with safety because they do high risk work on the same type of ships, operate the same types of machinery and load the same cargoes around the country but work to different safety arrangements which they believe is contributing to the current increase in fatalities and incidents", said National Lead Organiser Bernie Farrelly.Produced by Jamie McMechan Maritime Union of Australia - Film Unit. He outlined the systematic campaign of state-sponsored terror and human rights abuses that activists are forced to endure in ColombiaThe protest heard speeches by Rita Mallia, from the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Unions and Paul McAleer from the MUA. The following letter, signed by a number of trade union leaders, was hand delivered to the Colombian consul general. To Colombian Consul, SydneyWe the undersigned, resolutely condemn attacks perpetrated against members of Trade Unions, Civil Society Organisations, Indigenous Communities and Students Groups in Colombia. We call upon the Colombian Government, as a matter of urgency, to stop the incursions on the above mentioned peoples by upholding civil liberties, social justice and the rule of law.We note with profound regret that Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world for trade unionists. In fact, over 60% of all trade unionists killed worldwide are Colombian - a statistic that is undisputed. Violations include but are not limited to, assassinations, forced disappearances, incarcerations, torture and involuntary displacements. The situation has been described as a "humanitarian disaster" by the United Nations and contrary to the massive public relations campaign being rolled out by the Colombian government, circumstances are not improving. We call on the Colombia regime to enter into an agreement of political, social and industrial inclusion of the above mentioned peoples, to recognise the human rights of such peoples an to end the persecution of political and social movements in their countrySigned:Paddy CrumlinPresident, International Transport Workers' FederationNational Secretary, MUAIan BrayAssistant National Secretary, MUAMal TullochSecretary, Construction division, CFMEUPaul McAleerSydney Branch Secretary, MUAJoe DeakinSydney Assistant Branch Secretary, MUAProduced by Jamie McMechan & Neil Swanson - Maritime Union of Australia - Film Unit.

International Women's Day 2011Maritime women and men were among a record crowd celebrating a centenary of International Women's Day, with song and dance, politics and speeches in Sydney's Martin Place and other Australian cities, yesterday.MUA men and women joined the march from the Sydney Town Hall through the streets under the banner Women Transporting the World. The call for the rally was equal pay, fair pay. Women should get the same pay as men, not just for the same work, but for women's work like caring for the elderly, the ill, the young, cleaning and factory work.A nurse has the as many qualifications as a tradesmen, said one speaker, but all the tradesmen I know own a house at 20 and nurses go without. It's not about the glass ceiling but the gender pay gap of a whopping 18 per cent - greater if the division is made along both gender and ethnic lines.Speakers representing the ethnic communities, spoke of how women laboured in factories on low pay in third world conditions. The Australian Council of Trade Unions is redoubling efforts to achieve true gender equality with a test case now before the commission. In the past year unions have campaigned and won paid and parental leave, carer's leave and family-friendly flexible working arrangements. But ACTU President Ged Kearney said a continuous effort and commitment was needed to achieve gender equity.Unions launched an equal pay test case for around 150,000 social and community service workers in Fair Work Australia in early 2010 to redress the pay discrepancy. She called for employers to face stronger enforcement of equal opportunity laws. The recent announcement of government reform of Australia's equal opportunity workplace laws after decades of inaction is welcomed by unions."Employers have had several decades to deliver equal opportunity in workplaces but have failed to do it, so it's now time for legislative enforcement," Ms Kearney said."We are pleased that the Federal Government is acting on recommendations made by unions to make reforms to the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act."Equality in the workplace needs to be backed by accountability and enforcement. The government is setting up a working group to manage the outcome of a landmark equal pay test case."Equal pay is a workplace right and a human right, and Fair Work Australia must remember this when considering its decision."Meanwhile in Tasmania MUA Women held a BBQ Pioneer Park East Devonport, in Melbourne MUA members joined the march through city to parliament house.Produced by Jamie McMechan & Mich-Elle Myers Maritime Union of Australia.

Comedy (English) :
Canada :
What Have The Unions Ever Done For Us ?Its basically an Austrailian labour board panel (I think). They are dressed in suits and sitting at table in office. They are having a discussion on Unions. More specifically, what have unions done for us. (Putting themselves in the position of a worker). The chair person seems to be speaking rudely to people, and the people at the panel seem to be making ridiculous comments. Clearly this is something of comedic nature, although trying to portray a serious message (often the case). So the meeting for the chair proposes the question, what have unions done for us ? It seems as though he is implying that unions have not done anything for us. He also seems to be critisizing unions and speaking unfavorably of them. Then other people in the panel however, come up with a number of items / benifits that unions have provided for workers. These include items such as maternity leave, sick leave, worker's compensation, superinuation (?), retirement benifits, vacation paid, health and safety benifits, medicare, pay increases, collective negotiations, stuff like that, if I missed any items. When the other panel members first bring up a few points, the chair seems to agree, knowing that these points are true, even though hes against the union. But as the meeting progresses, and panel members continue to bring point after point, the chair becomes increasingly pissed off. This is because of his point of view, which is now being stiffly challenged by valid arguements. He tries to dismiss them. He ultimaltly gets pissed off, as he is drowned by relevant points. He even says the F word. And the video fades into the end. And a written message appears before the video ends. This video appears to be about workers rights, and shows the benifits of unions, as well as bringing up relevant issues with workers in general. The closing message shows contacts and organizations with links related to the subject. I had to watch it a couple times to understand it. But it was good, got the message across, and it was funny too.

Blue Elephants - documentary about migrant workers in Malaysian electronics industry This short documentary shows the dire labour conditions of migrant workers in the Malaysian electronics industry. Men and women from Nepal, Indonesia and other countries come as contract workers to work for Dell, HP, Intell and other well known brand companies.Migrant workers pay several thousands of dollars in commission to labour agents to get work permits. Workers often engage in heavy debts to obtain such permits which may grant them a stay in Malaysia for five year maximum. Time to pay off these debts is limited, while pay is low. Migrant workers face discrimination in Malaysian society as well as on the work floor, and have to accept bad housing conditions. The work load is heavy, and when worker fail to meet set targets, they risk immediate dismissal. When workers get pregnant or fall ill, they are sent back home at their own expenses. The documentary has been produced by Moritz Siebert in cooperation with World Economy, Ecology, development (WEED), for the European Procure IT Fair campaign.

The Red Tail - Official TrailerSneak peek at the documentary film "The Red Tail". “For all those families struggling with the disastrous effects of economic globalism, with a global system that does not speak to their concerns or address their fears, The Red Tail is your film. For those not victims of globalism, at least not yet, The Red Tail is your ticket to understand how your country is being shaped by forces beyond our political control. [The Red Tail] will make you not only smarter, but also more sensitive and compassionate.” - Huffington Post, Feb 25, 2010.On August 19, 2005 Roy Koch, along with 4,400 airline mechanics, custodians, and cleaners, went on strike against Northwest Airlines, the fourth largest airline in the world. Northwest, otherwise known as “The Red Tail” by its employees, wanted to lay off 53% of their union and outsource their jobs. What followed was a 444-day strike that would end with 4,000 union members out of work, including Roy.Instead of being left in the wake of this battle, Roy and his daughter Melissa (co-director of The Red Tail with Dawn Mikkelson) set on a journey to meet the worker to whom Roy’s job was outsourced in China. The journey provides a renewed sense of purpose for Roy, and while Melissa wants to get answers to his plight, her determination as a filmmaker is always tempered by her love as a daughter. The film interweaves Roy and Melissa’s search for connection in China with the premeditated downfall of Northwest Airlines. This downfall serves a vibrant example of the dangers of our current economic system, and casts a spotlight on the future of the working class.
