Which links do our visitors click on?

For a long time we’ve wanted to know what people are clicking on, which links are most popular, and I’ve just written a script that is the first step to allow us to do this.

What it does is send anyone clicking on a link on LabourStart through a script called ‘redirect.php’ — and this allows us to count.

The problem is, we did this once before, a couple of years ago, and certain URLs did not work well with it.

So what I’ve done is create a trial page here which runs this redirect function.

I need your help to test this.

Please use this as your LabourStart home page in English for the next few days. Click on links.  Let me know if anything bad happens.

If it all works OK, this will become our new home page in English and we can begin tracking what our visitors click on.

How we promote campaigns

I’ve spent much of the last couple of hours promoting our new Iraq campaign and I thought I’d share some of the ways we now do this. Where possible, I’ll tell you how many people directly learn about the campaign from these efforts.

  1. Mailing to LabourStart list in English -52,207
  2. Mailing to UnionBook members – 2,981
  3. Mailing to LabourStart group on Facebook – 1,931
  4. LabourStart followers on Twitter – 834
  5. Mailing to UnionBook group on Facebook – 468
  6. Creation of group on UnionBook; invites sent to all my friends; group automatically publicized on campaign page

Iraqi teachers appeal for help – big campaign needed

LabourStart has had a long association with the Iraqi trade unions starting only a few weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003.  Later that year, when American forces broke into the trade union headquarters in Baghdad, we launched an urgent action appeal.  We also helped the Iraqi unions get their websites up and running in English and Arabic.

Today, I had a phone call from Abdullah Muhsin, the representative of the Iraqi unions overseas, and he’s asked us to launch an urgent action campaign in support of the teachers union — one of the largest and most successful of the new democratic trade unions.  It’s very important that we do our best to mobilize support for this campaign, which also includes a UnionBook group as well.

Please do what you can to spread the word in your unions.

Some quick updates

  • We now have over 59,000 addresses on our mailing lists.
  • We’ve sold 29 copies of the Global Unions book — I was hoping to sell more (ideally, 100).
  • UnionBook is 11 members short of the 2,500 member mark.
  • We’ve helped the CAW in Canada by promoting one of their campaigns – but not as a LabourStart campaign.

Campaign counter now working much better

I wrote a short script to calculate how many supporters each active campaign now has, for all languages, and display this number (which is updated every 15 minutes) on the English version of the campaign page.  Totals for active campaigns at the moment are as follows:

  • Costa Rica 3,580
  • Iran 6,670
  • Russia 2,381
  • Turkey 5,707

Promotion of 28 March demo in London

We were asked by the TUC to help promote this event and for LabourStart to affiliate to BOND (“the UK membership body for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in international development”) and have done so.  I was able to extract 5,500 addresses from our general mailing list that had “.uk” in them somewhere, and sent them all a mailing yesterday.

We were asked by Peoples Solidarity (France) to support this campaign and have now launched our campaign in English, French and German.  I’ve just written to our volunteer translators in 7 other languages as well (Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Farsi).
