Conference countdown

This page will be updated regularly as we count down to the opening of the LabourStart global solidarity conference in Hamilton, Ontario on 9 July.

  • 9.4.10 – 125 registered; 18 paid

N.B. We’ve eliminated nearly all the duplicates, which means that new number of those registered is considerably lower than we’d been reporting.

More updates, briefly

Conference 2010: We’ve got a registration page up, not yet for public consumption.  We also have written to Labor Notes about purchasing a full page ad in their own conference program book.  And we’re making a special effort to attract women trade unionists to our conference, and to fund travel for women from developing countries to attend.

Labour Video of the Year: So far, over 1,300 votes cast in less than two days.

TUC campaign in support of Iraqi teachers: We did a mailing to our 5,000 or so UK subscribers. This boosted support for the campaign from 12 (after 2 weeks in which British unions did little or nothing to promote) to 118.

Guyana campaign: We’ve gotten the green light from ICEM to launch this — should be sometime soon.

New campaign for Mexico: UE and the ICEM have green lighted this as well — we’re waiting for some clarifications before launch.

And this too:The support of LabourStart was vital to the Green Isle Foods dispute because the parent company, Northern Foods, was largely insulated from the dispute in Ireland in terms of public relations, even though local management said everything discussed in local discussions had to be referred to Leeds for a decision.  The Irish mainstream media showed little interest in the dispute so that we were heavily reliant on alternatives. The fact that so many British trade unionists and consumers sent emails to Northern Foods brought home to the employer that there were consequences to bad behaviour, such as ignoring the Labour Court.  Many thanks, Padraig Yeates on  behalf of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union.”

Conference agenda now online

I’ve posted the first rough draft agenda for the conference online and have written to all our correspondents to share it with them, urging them all to post their comments.

Conference Enthusiasm

We’ll soon have enough of an agenda for the conference to open the separate discussion thread up for input, but just to let you all know what’s new:

1.  Pre-registration is now at 550 comrades from 68 countries.

2.  We’ve an organizing committee of 17 people with meetings starting on 22.01.10.  I’ll also be touring the facilities on that date.

3.  Fundraising will begin soon, as will formal registration.  If your union would be receptive to an approach for funds, please let me know.

If you’ve any questions or suggestions about the conference, contact me at Canada@LabourStart.org.

Merry Christmas to you all

And … we now have 432 people pre-registered for our conference (173 from Canada and the rest from 65 other countries).

I’d be very suprised if this doesn’t reach 500 in the new year.

Nearly 300 pre-registered for LabourStart conference

The conference is more than 6 months away.  We’ve not yet published an agenda, nor announced any speakers.  It’s Christmas week and many of our readers are already on their holiday breaks.  We’ve said nothing about helping to pay for people’s travel costs.  And yet … nearly 300 people have already expressed interest in attending our conference in July.  I repeat: many of them will not attend, especially those who need to travel far and at great expense.  But with the interest so far shown by the Canadian unions in this, I think we can safely predict that the number of participants in our next conference will be counted in the hundreds.

Conference publicity begins [3]

In addition to the efforts I’ve made recently, Derek has written to his Canadian list and the result is we now have 81 people expressing interest in attending the conference, half of them from Canada.  I realize that many of these people will not attend (some are obviously going to need financial support to attend) but the numbers are already starting to look good.  Today I’m doing save-the-date messages to:

This should result in a big jump in the number of registrants, and in the new year, when we have a first draft agenda, we’ll make a renewed push.

Conference publicity begins [2]

As of this morning, we’ve had expressions of interest in the 2010 LabourStart conference from about 25 people.  This morning I did the following to publicize it:

  • Facebook: Posting to the wall in the LabourStart group.
  • Facebook: Mailing to the 2,000+ members of that group.
  • UnionBook: Story permanently appears on top of the home page after you’ve logged in.
  • LabourStart: Text appears above the news, highlighted in yellow.

The next step is a mailing to our lists.

Conference publicity begins

We now have a registration form which I encourage all of you to use to express interest in attending our conference.  You can see who has indicated they plan to attend here.  Publicity for the conference so far consists of this:

  • When correspondents login to add news, they will see a very prominent box with links to the registration form.
  • A mailing has been sent to all our correspondents.

The next stage of publicity will be to our mailing lists, and on our websites.  But for now, it’s limited to the correspondents.
